When you’ve fallen out of love with riding your bike for whatever reason and you just can’t bring yourself to swing your leg over and push down on the pedal.
This has happened to me on a number of occasions. About 4 weeks ago I stopped riding and hadn’t even pulled a bike out of the garage until last weekend. It wasn’t the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
Fallen out of love is perhaps a bit of an over the top statement, my interests were just focused on other things. Mainly the house and garden which we’d started working on for the summer and I have to say they now look a lot better. Anyway, like I said, over the last few weeks I’ve been focusing on other things. Plus I don’t think it’s a bad thing to have a bit of a break every once in a while. However, how do you go about getting back on the bike when you’ve lost interest?
You just do. I know, that’s not particularly helpful advice. Trust me, I wish there was a switch that you could simply flick and become cycling mad again. I’m afraid it doesn’t quite work like that. Well, I say that. What I find is that I just need one good ride; it doesn’t matter about distance, discipline or direction. Just get out and ride.
The biggest barrier is the one that’s is set in your mind by you, sometimes you need a mate who just says, let’s go out for a ride! Set a date and distance, say a week in advance; preferably on a day with nice weather. This gives you and your mind time to prepare for what you’re going to do. It certainly helps me. Once out and perched on the saddle with the wind in your helmet and the sun in your eyes, you start to remember why you love cycling.
After that first ride, it’s like a drug. You can’t get enough of it and you can wait for the next ride. So much so, that you start to plan the next big ride. My ‘re-introduction to cycling ride’ was about 50 miles or so. Longer than our usual local rides, but we thought we should do a decent distance given that our long ride up in Yorkshire is coming up in just over 5 weeks. It was a good ride, the weather was perfect and the company was great. I’m sure Will will agree with that last part.
Since then, we’ve been out a few more times, some shorter and some longer. I’ll touch a bit more on how the training is going in another post.
